Chapter 18
âWell, here you all are, and just the same!â Lydia crowed, as she descended from the carriage on her new husbandâs arm. âSo much has happened to me, and yet it seems that nothing at all has changed here!â
I saw my father roll his eyes to himself at my sisterâs typical lack of tact, whilst my mother rushed forward to throw her arms around her wayward daughter and to bestow kisses upon her cheek.
âOh Lydia!â she cried; âwe have missed you so much!â
âWell, we have been far too merry to miss any of you!â Lydia laughed.
She was completely unabashed, as always, and didnât seem in the least bit nervous about being reunited with her family, nor ashamed about all the stress and anxiety that she had put us all through. Even so, it was good to see my little sister again, and to know that she was safe, and thus I joined the rest of my sisters in going forward to greet her. I could not pretend to be pleased about seeing Mr Wickham, however, and though I coolly returned his greeting, I did not linger by his side long enough to exchange any pleasantries with him.
I knew it would be beyond me to be polite to him, and especially if I allowed myself to dwell on everything that he had put my family through. I knew I would never forgive him for the way in which he had enticed my little sister and stolen her innocence; Lydia might be frustratingly self-absorbed and very foolish, but still I could not help but feel that she was far too young to be leaving her family behind and beginning her married life. I watched Mr Wickham as he charmed my mother with his pretty words, and silently wished that I could wipe the smirk from off his face. I could not forget the way that he had effectively blackmailed my uncle into paying him to marry my sister after he had first ruined her, and nor could I forgive him for all the guilt and worry that he had caused my poor father.
However, I had been categorically warned by my mother that I was to behave myself and watch my tongue whilst the new Mr and Mrs Wickham visited us, and thus I determinedly gritted my teeth and inwardly reminded myself of my resolve to remain silent. Indeed, Jane must have realised how close I was to breaking that resolve, for she silently took my hand in hers and gave it a gentle squeeze. I glanced at my sister and sent her a wry look, and she smiled sympathetically in return. I knew that Janeâs thoughts in that moment were similar to my own, even though she tended to view the world in a more charitable light. I knew that she would soon forgive Mr Wickham and Lydia for their transgressions, but unfortunately, I didnât posses the same goodness as my sister. I fully expected the next day and a half
